This so true, I started to count my calories, both consumed and burned daily in May 2009. I am quite meticulous in doing so and weigh and prepare all my own food, limiting my calorie intake to 1900 per day and making sure I exercise for at least 60 mins daily. As I have 2 active small dogs this is not difficult to do. Since then, in 15 months I have lost 24 pounds, and over 20 inches and am now extremely slim, fit and active and feel 100% better for it. Like many I have previously tried every diet going with limited success and many failed attempts and would strongly recommend calorie counting to anyone who is really serious about losing weight and getting healthy.

A: The OWG report provides recommendations to address the obesity problem, but the issue of making healthy food choices is more complicated than solely the question of obesity. The Federal government tries to provide long-term sound nutrition advice to consumers. For example, DHHS (including FDA) collaborates with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to establish and promote the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which provide guidance on choosing a lifestyle that combines sensible eating with regular physical activity.

Q: What changes is FDA contemplating for the food label to help combat obesity?
A: The OWG recommends several main areas for FDA to consider - calories, serving sizes, carbohydrates, and comparative labeling statements. One of the calorie recommendations is to solicit comment on how to give more prominence to calories on the food label. For serving sizes, FDA will reevaluate the agency's regulations about serving sizes in order to give consumers the most accurate information about the serving size and caloric content of the packaged foods they purchase.

Q: What changes can FDA make to the Nutrition Facts panel (NFP) to emphasize calories?
A: The OWG report recommends that FDA publish an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) to request comments on how best to give more prominence to calories. Possible changes to the NFP might include: (1) increasing the font size for calories; (2) providing a percent Daily Value for calories; and (3) eliminating "calories from fat" listing as this takes the emphasis away from "total calories."

For the meals we eat at home, and the meals we eat out, it's still our decision what we eat, where we eat, and how much we eat. That concept is part of what I'm talking about with Americans of all ages: increasing our health literacy.

Health literacy is the ability of an individual to access, understand, and use health-related information and services to make appropriate health decisions. Low health literacy contributes to our nation's epidemic of overweight and obesity. For example, some mothers are unaware that they can promote their baby's health through breastfeeding. Experience with my own patients and students indicates that many Americans don't understand the impact of caloric intake versus expenditure.

Every morning people wake up and, while they're sitting at the kitchen table, they read the newspaper and the cereal box. Throughout the day they read the nutritional information on their meals and on their snacks. But do they really understand the information they're reading?

The labels list grams of fat. But do you know how many grams of fat you should eat in a meal? Or in a day? Or how many is too many? Or too few? These are seemingly simple questions, but we're not giving Americans simple answers.

Parents are hearing about overweight and obesity. So they're trying to figure out how much food they should feed their children. How much is too much? How much is not enough? They're concerned and confused about everything from calories and carbohydrates, to vitamins and portion sizes.

About one-third of U.S. adults are obese, a condition that increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other medical problems.

Last September, California became the first U.S. state to require fast-food restaurant chains to list calories on their menus. Similar calorie information went into effect in New York City last year, and more than a dozen states are considering similar health code provisions.

WHO's strategy for preventing overweight and obesity
