What Is Obesity?
Obesity is when someone is seriously overweight for their height, because of excess fat, rather than muscle. Obesity occurs gradually overtime when you consume too many calories and don't do enough physical activity to burn them off. The excess energy stores as fat, and consequently, increases your body weight
A pound of body fat equates to approximately 3500 calories. So if you have a calorie deficit of 500 calories (meaning that you burn 500 calories more than you eat each day) you would lose approximately one pound per week:
500 x 7 = 3,500
It's easy to see that a calorie deficit of 1000 calories would mean that you'd lose approximately two pounds per week. And that's a good number to remember, because two pounds a week is commonly accepted as the maximum rate of weight loss that is healthy

This so true, I started to count my calories, both consumed and burned daily in May 2009. I am quite meticulous in doing so and weigh and prepare all my own food, limiting my calorie intake to 1900 per day and making sure I exercise for at least 60 mins daily. No. Losing weight is simple mathematics. You eat a certain number of calories a day, probably about 2000. You burn a certain number of calories a day, about 1400 just to keep your body temperature at 98.6 F, your blood pumping, etc., and the rest you burn moving around all day. If you consume more calories than you burn, you gain weight. If you consume fewer than you burn, you lose weight. And that is all there is to it. There are only three ways to lose weight: eat less, dress less warmly (so it takes more calories to keep warm), or exercise more.

A: Obesity affects all age groups, children, as well as adults. FDA has an emphasis on children and adolescents for the education components of its recommendations. A: The OWG report recommends that FDA publish an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) to request comments on how best to give more prominence to calories. Possible changes to the NFP might include: (1) increasing the font size for calories; (2) providing a percent Daily Value for calories; and (3) eliminating "calories from fat" listing as this takes the emphasis away from "total calories."

Large U.S. chain restaurants, criticised for their role in the country's obesity epidemic, agreed on Wednesday to support legislation that would require them to disclose calories on their menus.
"To have all of those key players at this point as one unified front to move forward with a national nutrition standard is, I think, really significant," said Sue Hensley, a spokeswoman with the National Restaurant Association.
Laws requiring that calories and other nutritional information be posted have become increasingly popular as states and cities struggle to combat the country's surging obesity problem while promoting health and nutrition.
About one-third of U.S. adults are obese, a condition that increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other medical problems.
